Chelsea triumphed 1-0 against Grecian side, PAOK Salonika in our Europa League group game opener thanks to a fine goal by Willian Borges.
Here are 3 positives from the game:
CHELSEA OPEN EUROPA LEAGUE CAMPAIGN WITH A WIN:
The competitive nature of European club competition games now shows that there are no underdogs anymore. Gone are the years when the so-called big teams are guaranteed to win all the time. A resounding reminder was hit home courtesy of Lyon’s win over Manchester City in Match Day 1 in the Champions League, and Sarri’s Chelsea was in no mood for such giant-killing. While the scoreline might be emphatic as expected, winning the game to claim all three points instills confidence in the team and calm nerves heading into other group game. After all, winning is all that matters.
WINNING RUN CONTINUES:
It’s often that winning runs boost team morale and confidence, and the players’ ability to come off with a win against the Grecian side is commendable. More satisfying is the fact that Chelsea’s perfect start to the season extends into Europe and this will help the team develop good spirit heading into our gruesome fixture list that will see us play 7 games in 23 days.
CHELSEA SHOW STRENGTH IN DEPTH:
When news of key players, Eden Hazard, David Luiz and some others being rested for this game went round, many would have seen it as a gamble by Sarri. But his defiance in trying to give other players a chance to impress and also resting his key players to guard against burnout was sensible. At least, he will have them fresh and raring to go this weekend as Chelsea look to extend our perfect start to the season against West Ham.
Let’s keep the blue flag flying high. Cheers!
