Done Deal: Chelsea confirm signing of this 2nd signing on one year deal (see details)

It was mooted two days ago  that Chelsea were interested in signing former Leeds United and England stopper Rob Green in what many saw as a surprise move for the Londoners.

That has been confirmed today by many sources, including the London Evening Standard. Chelsea fans are used to the Blues signing a wealth of outfield talent to drive a push on the Premier League title and Europa League success, it seems that £mega-million deals aren’t all that they are chasing.

38-year-old veteran Green was a free agent after leaving Premier League Huddersfield Town at the end of last season where, a season he largely spent warming the bench – making just one appearance for the Terriers.

His last regular game action came for Leeds United during the 2016/17 Championship season, Green having joined the Whites on a free transfer after his release by QPR.

Green played all 46 games for a Garry Monk-led United that season, a season where the Whites were in the play-off picture for 26 games, 142 days before a drop of form saw them finish 7th. During that campaign, Green more than proved his credentials, conceding just 47 times and keeping 15 clean sheets.

In comments carried on Chelsea’s official website, Green talked about becoming a Blue saying: “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours. You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation. It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”

He joins Chelsea as ostensibly the third-choice keeper behind Willy Caballero and whoever is being brought in to replace Thibault Courtois, who is widely expected to sign for Real Madrid for a fee of around £35 million.
